Chinatown Girl, written by Eva Wong Ng, is a historical novel written as the diary of a 12 year old girl. It is set in 1942 and gives a glimpse into what life was like for Chinese families who emigrated to New Zealand. It also offers insight into life during WWII with rationing, air-raid practices and American soldiers coming for dinner. This novel includes some other important events that occurred during this year and is a great way for students to learn some of New Zealand's history.

 

This novel study is designed to take 4-5 weeks to complete.  There is are reading plan which divides the novel into 15 days. Each day has an activity based on what has been read and a word from the text to find the definition for. There are also 3 follow up activities which can be completed once the novel has been read.
